Frequently Asked Questions

Therapy or Mental Health Coaching?

While mental health coaches and therapists are both mental health professionals, there are some differences between the two and deciding which is best for you. The biggest difference is that a therapist is a licensed professional who is trained in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions such as PTSD, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, ADHD, etc. Therapists also tend to focus more on the past and present to heal the mental health condition(s) using an assortment of evidence-based techniques. With their skill sets, knowledge, and credentials, therapists are best used if you are looking to treat a mental health condition, you have trauma that you want to work through, or if your symptoms are so severe that you are unable to function with daily tasks.

Mental health coaches focus more on the present and future with where you're currently at, where you want to be, and how to work together to get you there. Like therapists, coaches have a set of evidence-based techniques based in positive psychology that they use to help you on your personal development journey. While they don't treat mental health conditions, mental health coaches are trained to help you learn how to manage mild to moderate symptoms and overcome obstacles to reach your goals. In addition to that, mental health coaches are best used for building mental health and preventing the onset or worsening of mental illness symptoms.

Is Mental Health Coaching For Me?

Reasons to Seek a Mental Health Coach:

  • Your mental/emotional challenges you're currently facing are more on the milder end of the spectrum and not severely impacting your life

  • You feel like something is missing from your life but don't know exactly what

  • You have noticed that your relationships with others are less than ideal and you would like to improve them

  • You prefer (or have never tried) a goal-oriented approach to accomplish personal growth and development

  • You have not had success with therapy with increasing your mental strength and personal growth OR you are wanting additional support while also working with a therapist
